Greek Beauty

January 12th, 2006 · 3 Comments · Daily musings

I’m starting a quiet quest to better understand the nature and essence of beauty, so from time to time, I’ll post some quotes from the text that I’m reading that I think you all might enjoy and that I would like to have written down so I can search its content later.

Here’s one that I really enjoyed from yesterday:

The government of the world thus coincides with a precious and measurable harmony, expressed in the four mottoes on the walls of the temple at Delphi: “The most beautiful is the most just,” “Observe the limit,”"Shun hubris (arrogance),” and “Nothing in excess.”

It was on the basis of these rules that the common Greek sense of Beauty was established from whose maw hesiod said that the world sprang.

Additionally, I was reading about Plato’s definition of beauty, and he had two understandings of beauty, forms that interact with the soul and splendor. I’m not sure too much about splendor, but the idea that beauty can emanate from a synthesis between the soul and the form is something that I find very appealing. Essentially, we all have an opportunity to interact with and create a new extension with beauty, and we do that by participating in its form or essence.

Thanks for sharing your insights from your quest - what a wonderful journey.

Amazing. I’d love to hear more about this.

It’s incredible to think about a government, or a way of life, that revolved around beauty and ethics. No wonder the Greeks were beyond their time.

Dan, I love your quests-weather they involve unicorns frolicking on the hills of the Manti temple or discovering the essence of beauty. This quest for beauty is one that I find quite intriguing, and very fitting for a person whose profession and passion is finding just the right lens for beauty to be expressed in its fullest. :) Some people take pictures because they like to take pictures. You take pictures because you take the beauty of this world to a new level. Thanks for the good work.
