Why do people want an artistic eye from a wedding photographer? Why not just have anyone take a picture for them to remember their wedding day? What is it that people are really trying to capture when they spend all this money and effort on an individual? As I’ve thought about it, it seems to me that when people look through a photographer’s portfolio to determine what type of style or memory they want recorded for their day, they are looking beyond technical knowledge; they want someone that can pull out of reality the subtle beauty and noble forms that exist within all things, but especially those forms that are present during such an important occasion.
Ultimately, they are trying to embrace the unique moment of their existence by coupling it with the artistic and creative eye of the photographer. If this is the end, then it is a real possibility for all involved to create something fundamentally moving, something that goes beyond mere documentation and moves us towards something much greater. Together, all those involved in creating the ceremony and celebration are hoping to find a moment where the expression of their ideals unites with and embraces beauty.
The wedding becomes the canvas, the bride and groom are the elements, and love is the ideal. The photographer then paints what he sees by the click of his camera: at this time, at this place, and in this way, two people have come together to embrace a reality that transcends themselves and forms a new bond of love and acceptance in each other. And then, in that instant, life becomes art.
Ultimately, I think, it is a way for those involved to preserve an ideal; a dream that very much becomes a reality, even if for only a day, that they can then remember and carry with them through the rest of their lives.

Thanks, Sinclair. That’s a very nice comment. I think the more I do this, the easier and more expressive it becomes. I can’t wait for the next day to see how it will unfold; it feels like the best is yet to come :-)

I think that most people want what you are giving, but they don’t know why they want it?
Many times during a wedding we do things and we have no idea why, only that others have done it before ie: cutting the cake, tossing the bouget, wearing a corsage? All meaning of these symbols are not concrete. We just do the same thing that everyone else does, and then were married.
If people could understand that this is a unique moment, and that the photographer is not there to be in the way or cause more pressure, but to create a moment in these peoples lives that will live forever.
With that understanding, I believe that both parties will be much happier and great art will be created from this understanding.
